Summary

Moss has attracted a whole raft of critical praise and awards, and it's not difficult to see why. It's a charming little game that makes smart use of virtual reality to deliver a character-driven adventure game that won't have you spinning around disoriented in your VR headset.

In Moss you form a bond with Quill, a small mouse with a big journey ahead of her. Rather than play as Quill directly you occupy the world of Moss as the reader, a disembodied figure who has entered Quill's world through a book. You control Quill as she runs, jumps and fights her way through the world, but you can also interact with Quill and move elements of the world around using your motion-tracked Dual Shock 4. You could say that this is a clever interrogation of the way that a reader collaborates with a text to create a piece of fiction, or you could just say that this is a neat way to give you power in the game without the problems that come with first-person VR gaming.

Moss offers a mix of platforming, fighting and puzzle solving. While there's enough of a challenge to give players a sense of satisfaction, however, the action isn't really the point. Rather, Moss is about giving you the chance to inhabit the world of Quill - a place that could be a Jim Henson set brought to life - and interact with the charming little character in fun and surprising ways. Moss is a world that you'll want to explore.
