PS3's £100m Launch Weekend
Sony's UK managing director, Ray Maguire, has told industry journal, MCV, that he's confident that the PS3 will make £100m over its launch weekend.

"Our egos want to make sure that we have the biggest launch in history and do it with the most amount of money ever being taken at retail," Maguire said. "And I’m sure we’ll do that – there’ll be in excess of £100 million going through retailer’s tills over that weekend. That’s a huge amount of money either way you look at it. But that’s just the start. It is really about how we build a sustainable business and platform for everyone – for retailers and for publishers.”

That's a bold statement. SPOnG did the maths, and for the PS3 to make that amount in hardware sales it will have to sell 235,294 units, 15,294 fewer than the 220,000 launch allocation for the UK. We'll give Maguire the benefit of the doubt and assume he's talking about software sales as well.

Maguire also distanced himself from the competition, saying, “I've got no interest whatsoever in having a race with anyone. I've got my business plan and it is our business in isolation based on what we want to do...”

While he was at it, Maguire took a snide pop at the online press while talking about criticism of the PS3. “Online reporting is now not a job of reporters looking for the truth in a story, it's about people venting an opinion,” he said. “Whether that's right or wrong, we have to accept that that's the world we live in - but because of that, it has caused a bit of heartache.” Well, Ray, now you've caused SPOnG a bit of heartache, too.
