Pre-order Playstation 3 NOW for £550
Play.com are currently taking pre-orders for PlayStation 3's - at a whopping £550 for a bundle including three games.

Although, and here's the rub, due to the expected shortages of the PS3, Play.com's site informs us that "we are unable to guarantee delivery of your PS3 before Christmas." Well, that's just super. They'll gladly take your hard-earned, but are not able to tell you when you'll get your PS3 super-computer home-entertainment mega-digital wonder machine.

"All pre-orders will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis and game titles in this package may be changed, subject to availability," the site says.

Whilst the official release date for the console is 17th November 2006, other retailers are being a little bit more cautious.

SPOnG just spoke with a Gamestation rep, who said: "We are currently not taking any more pre-orders for PS3s, as we don't want repeat of what happened last year with the 360, where customers who pre-ordered were unable to receive their console on or soon after launch, due to limited stock problems."

She continued: "Whatever changes may or may not happen with pricing from Sony, Gamestation will honour our RRP of £424.99 and we are currently working closely with Sony in order to make sure that any pre-orders we do take, once we open them up, are honoured on time."

"So for example, the first x number of people who preorder we will guarantee a time frame they will receive their console, and so on. We'll be releasing details on this in the near future."

She added: "Play.com charging £550 for this bundle and not guaranteeing pre-Xmas delivery is a little bit naughty in our opinion"

Should you wish to take a chance and order from Play.com then you can go to Play.com and do so.

You never know, you might even get one by Christmas. 2008.

We are currently also awaiting feedback from Game on this matter, so watch this space for an update.

LOL, it must have been a slow news day for SPOnG.

The site's up to a usable speed again, thankfully, however keeps going down with "service unavailable". I'm also starting to get a bit fed up with ads, ads everywhere.

Rant of the week from me. Probably why I don't post that much anymore, and some of the regulars seem to have reduced posting too (our gamer-brainer Joji springs to mind).

Actually, that's my bad. I'd spotted the story on da Goog and ranted to Adam (one of SPOnG's editorial/news guys) about the price versus Gamestation's, the fact that MCV had reported that all pre-order allocations were taken, and yet Play had this offer. So the angle was more about the price difference

Yeah, we transfered the lot to a new server with way more resources, backed by a new database server. All tests had it working fine. However, a couple of days after going live it became evident there was a problem somewere that was causing IIS to hang itself. We tracked that to the database drivers, so we upgraded them. Without a hang after several days it looked like we'd found the bugger. Then it went again. It looks like a problem with the ODBC driver, so we're looking at this now.

Ultimately, it's a bit s**t that a webserver will completely choke because one of the requests can't get a database connection. We've certainly never seen such behaviour with Apache, so we're investigating Sun's Java System ASP so we can move SPOnG onto Linux and get shut of Windows for good (hurrah!). Plus, JSASP provides integration between ASP code and Java object, which just leaves me pumped, in a pervy geek way.

I'm also starting to get a bit fed up with ads, ads everywhere.

Sorry you feel this way about the ads. We're very conscious about keeping ads at a level where they don't interfere with the readability of the site or encrouch on content to the point where there's more ad than content on a page. We haven't added an new ad placements since the in-line ads were introduced into news and game summaries last year. We're working on several new home page designs, and we've seen that half-page skyscrapers (300x600) completely detract from the content to the point were you have a sliver of site content down the left, and a massive ad overshadowing from the right. I personally don't like overlays, and I always encourage an alternative, such as a skin or gateway.

If you've got a particular beef, just drop us a line via the feedback, or via the forums.

Hey, did someone mention my name? Like a hawk, I'm always watching from far away Adam. My reduction in posting is just due to work and other stuff. When I joined I was out of work you see.

Anyway, i think £550 is nice if you are rich and own two humvees and a swish Chelsea flat. For the masses its a one laugh too many coming from us to Sony's camp. Play.com are just getting in there early, its expected someone will do this. I bet a lot of suckers out there will beat this feeders hand too. Some have more money than sense.

My advice, don't be tempted by these devils. Wait til Sony drops it to £300, then buy. Or get a Wii or 360 instead, then Sony will be force to chop that price tag down.

Well, the bundle Play are offering is with three games, so it's not a bad deal based on the price of the console that has been released.

£550 for the bundle leaves just under £42 for each game after we remove the £425 for the console. Based on that, it could be that we are looking at £45-50 for a game, normal prices (one of the games is SingStar, so there will be a mic with that).

The issue I have is with the choices of games, F1 2006, SingStar and Warhawk. This looks like a "family pack" approach rather than a targeted set of games.
